Description

This sneaky micro is in a high traffic area... best tackled under cover of darkness.

This cache was previously listed as GC19NJA on geocaching.com, and was archived after I thought it had disappeared. Six months later, by chance, Team Romax from Bendigo stumbled across the container still in place. I attempted to have it re-listed on GC.com, but the reviewers aren't prepared to unarchive it, due to proximity to another cache. I have therefore decided to relist it here instead.

Sam Merrifield

This library is named after a "powerful" former Victorian State Labor Politician, who grew up around the Essendon and Moonee Ponds area. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1943, and later served in the Legislative Council until 1970, when he retired. In 1973 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Monash University.

Sam was an active historian, leading to him becoming an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. He died in 1982. This library, the City of Moonee Valley's largest, was appropriately named in his honour.

The cache

This micro has been placed in an area which is accessible 24 hours per day. There will be a lot of pedestrian traffic here during the day, and the general area where the cache is located is visible from a number of places, including from within the library. Therefore you should be discreet with your recovery and replacement, and we recommend that you save this one for late at night!

It's a micro, but don't go looking for the traditional film canister - it's quite different from that! Being a micro, there's no room for swaps or switches, and you'll have to BYO pen. Please ensure that you replace the cache container in the exact same location that you found it, and please don't give any hints in your log. If you are unable to find it, log a "DNF" and we'll email an additional hint to you!

A note to those who have previously found this cache when it was listed on GC.com: I have moved it 10cm from its original location, increasing its security, but also making it a little more difficult to find! As this is a new listing, you are welcome to find it again, and log your find here in GCA.

After a couple of dnfs at the previous 2 caches I'd visited this morning, I was keen to get back on track. I'd done the GC version of this cache some time back, but can remember it quite well and could also remember that the library hadn't been open on Sunday when I'd done it that time - so it was a good opportunity to get it again. I parked in the same spot as last time and this time I had an Oregon rather than my old Etrex and it lead unerringly to GZ and I was able to spot the cache at my first peek - so it was a nice, quick one.

Thanks again pwags

This was a revisit as well.
I came around to the cache site about 6:30 and found people looking out from the library at me so I bid a retreat to the library entrance to check the opening and closing times. It pays to check if you don't want to be seen! I returned at 9:30 PM to commence my search.
Anyway, there I was lying on the path at the given co-ords and I couldn't see anything obvious. I widened my search and found the cache a bit further away from the given co-ords so I have included my co-ords for those people who have difficulty finding it.

I had found this cache previously, so I knew what I was looking for, still took a little bit of searching though! I was pleasantly surprised to see my old log still on the log sheet - from 2009, The Empire, The Lone Random and Kiwi Friend! Brings back good memories of my first 100-200 caches (now that I'm close to 1,000 it seems like aaages ago!). Thanks for bringing me back to this place, I thought I would wait until a Sunday when I knew the Library would be closed to look for this one and it has paid off!

I found this cache with caughtatwork. It was fun to be down the alley way but there were lots of people in the library. The should be outside in the sunshine like we were. Thank you pwags.

Out with GabGab for a quick cache find before heading off to the grandparents.
I'd found this one before so it was a snap for me, but not quite so easy for GabGab. Nevertheless being a kid she was able to grner much less attention that I and soon had the cache in hand.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks pwags for this cache experience today. A nice location to revisit and with loads of muggles on the other side of the glass happy to have had GabGab along.
