Description
The Bills Water Trough
Have you ever seen one of these troughs with the name George and Annis Bills on the plaque ?
From 1927 there were over 500 placed around Australia for the welfare of animals particularly horses on their often dry and dusty journeys and although many have been remove over the years due to changes in transport there are a still a few remaining. This story began as an act of kindness started when George Bills came to Australia in 1873 and with his family made bed springs and a fortune. He died in 1927 and left a large bequest of £70,000 for the welfare of animals providing drinking troughs for horses and a smaller trough on the side for dogs. The Attached photo features a trough located at Epsom outside an old hotel (now unlicenced )opposite the Bendigo Golf Course,36`42.817S 144`19.165E. As you travel around, particularly country areas, once over looked they may start to appear, see if you can find one and post a picture of your find, include some Cachers and let us know the location and the coordinates and see how many we can find, list as many as you want.
Footnote, I’ve added the following link that lists many of the Billing Troughs throughout the country.
If you check the site I’m sure there will be some close to home or on your future travels that you may not have been aware of..
The owner of the site has been collecting information on the 'where abouts' of troughs over many years and when they were last seen, he was pleasantly surprised with the results of ‘Riptide’ as the one found in St Ives NSW hadn’t been listed and will be added to the record. In additional there are no reported Bill's Troughs sited in Qld or South Australia and only one in West Australia - there's a challenge! Just click on ...... List Link

This Bills Horse Trough is located on the corner of Oxford and Green Streets in Paddington, outside the wall of Victoria Barracks. I have walked past this spot every work day for 5 years and it was only when I read the Locationless caches last week that I even thought to look at it in more detail! It is now full of dirt and used to create a colourful flowering display by the council gardeners.
Interestingly, there is a pump just up the road which may have originally been used to fill this trough in it's day perhaps. I like to imagine that the trough and pump were used by the soldiers in Victoria Barracks to water their horses.

Couldn't find a plaque on this double trough. There is one listed as being "specially made" in Murrurundi but the style of this one is so different to the others pictured so I might just note this one for the time being! Possibly the backing was left off to allow access from both sides but none of the others I saw have curved bases.
It's in quite a prominent place on a traffic island in a street running off the main road (New England Highway.)
Another found this morning as i was traveling through the town of Skipton. This one is in good condition.

I was out strolling along a familiar track while checking out "geotagging" (so I had my camera+GPSr with me) and came to a familiar landmark (Schwerkolt's Cottage) only to discover that they've recently added a new attraction (museum of old farm equipment) and it just happened to have an old horse trough outside the entrance. I've noticed a few of these before - and had an idea there was a locationless cache for them, so I took the opportunity of grabbing a snapshot. It's a new addition and I don't know where it originally came from.
Thanks hondo222 - a nice idea for a locationless cache.
I do not know if this one has been logged but I found this as part of multi-cache in Blackburn, Victoria.
Great history about these people.

We drive past this trough on a daily basis, and every time we do we think we must stop there and take a photo. Well now we have. It is on the Midland Hwy on the way through Ballarat.

Moonee Ponds, outside the old courthouse (now the home of the Essendon Historical Museum). I needed a find today, so this was a perfect one to call by as a small detour on my way home from work. Amazing to learn the history of these troughs, which I never knew about, but I'm sure I'll see them everywhere now! TFTC.
Stratford, Victoria, in front of the 'Hysterical' Society - Hobson Street Stratford. There is also another trough in Merrick Street to the West - but it is a 'no-name' brand.

Located in Nowra showground. In an out of the way spot so would get very few visitors. Water is not connected anymore.

Found this one in Rochester, Vic after we had done another cache in same town. Stinkeroo hot day close to 40+C, Mon muttering things about sunstroke etc, Gra eyeing the gorgeous remodelled pub closeby thinking of frosty beer and condensation running down the glass to match the condensation running down the forehead, of course thinking of the equine forebears who had drunk from said trough full of cool water not potting mix and flowers.

While passing through Henty, NSW I spotted another Bill. This one has been restored by a local and had a new sign made to explain all about them. I have passed by this on hundreds of times and this is the first time I noticed it here.
I wonder if you could plot all the finds on a map and post it on the page for all to see how far they are spread out?
TFTC again.

Found this one in Wagga Wagga near the livestock marketing centre. It would have been a very useful location for many visitors in the days when it was just a simple cattle yards for weekly stock sales.

Found on the way through Cootamundra, NSW. We also saw the other one in town too, but I see it has been logged already.

Having found another trough nearby I had to stop and pick up the Romsey trough on the way home. I wounder how many more of these are around where I live.
Found this Lancefield trough on the junction of High Street and Melbourne-Lancefield Road. These troughs seem to be everywhere.
Having previously found a trough in Trentham I was really supprised to come across this other one not far away on the corner of Cosmo Steet and High Street.
Found whilst caching in Ballan on the corner of Melbourne Road and Fiskin Street. Just turned the corner and there it was, seems that Bill was very busy putting out these troughs
can't believe this was near my place?!?
used to be where the milk was stored for delivery out near the Village of North Richmond. Ah! the good old days.

Found at Newstead (nr Euroa) on way to Maldon after completing the Great Alpine Book Trail. We also saw Bills troughs at Beechworth and at Maldon although didn't photo or record coordinates as we thought these two popular places would already have been logged (apparantly not!) We chose to log this one because it still has the dog bowl attached and as it is a very quiet town the trough might otherwise not be logged
April 2008
And then we passed another one in Penshurst whilst doing a maccamob cache.
Found just down the road from where we were staying in Glenthompson, Vic. Outside the local rest stop.
FlyingPigSquadron has landed!
Was browsing through the Locationless sites, saw this one and thought wouldn't it be great if the trough in Fish Creek was a BILLS as I have always loved the fact that this one is part of the carpark behind the petrol station with its own "pony parking"! I was really pleased to see it fitted the BILL(S)!
[250] 1pm - Found this one while attending a Merrigum Historical Society Display day. This one is in their large display area out the back.

Searched high and low, up and down the streets of Dimboola for the elusive trough. Resorted to asking a local, an old-timer that looked like he knew all the towns secrets. 'In the grounds of the footy club' he muttered, as he waved his arm in the general direction of a distant park. Off we trundled, and there it was - just inside the impressive main gate to the Dimboola Recreation Grounds. Thanks to the anonymous local, and for the chance to take a closer-than-usual look at an interesting town.
Found just after completing "A Stitch in Time" which was nearby. As we left Daff said, there is another trough, and sure enough there it was sitting by the roadside. As we were on our way to the Ballarat Event, we snapped a quick pic and left.

It seems that I am suddenly finding these everywhere. Driving from a nearby car wash to pick up my wife from work I spotted this one on the junction of Piper and Wedge Street in Kyneton.
Found in the main street of Malmsbury opposite the bakery. Been past this location many time but only spotted this one today.
This one could do with some TLC, it's located on the corner of High & Market Streets in Trentham
Travelling home from a caving trip with Scouts, we stopped for lunch on our way through Hamilton and serendipitously found ourselves by this example of a Bills trough, just off the highway to the east of Brown St. The coords may be a little out because I forgot to use the GPS to get them (it was hot and lunch was more urgent!)
Caught this out the corner of my eye as I was passing on the way to "Kengal" ( The Rock ). Never noticed it before on my many trips on the way through Henty. Couldn`t find any reference to anyone finding this before so I thought I`d log it.
Trough in good nick, even has a painted sign beside it te explain the origins of the trough.
This one is in one of our favourite little towns, almost directly opposite the bakery. Murchison is also the location for a few of cdmark's caching hides.
went camping/GeocaCHINGtravelled from here to there and back again.
camped on theMurranbigee gr8 night with Ute Dog(previously known as Jeep Dog(new car))whilst travelling thru Cootamundra NSW found this one in Stratton Park named after the original flour mill owner whos family owned the mill from mid 1800's to 1984's

The Yanco trough is situated right at the entrance to the MIA, and I have driven past it hundreds of times and keep forgetting to log it. Finally got there with a camera.
Thanks again,
Roostaman.
Didn't realise Riptide had found this one, but will include another photo.
Found this example in on Main Road, Ballarat, just outside Sovereign Hill.
[243] 3.30pm - Found this Bill Trough in Tatura. It can be found in Wilma Wilson Gardens which is not much of a garden really but a great example of one of these troughs. Found with C from cdmark as we just happened to be in Tatura. No, we were not looking for any spots to place any caches ... sure.

Found this one on the weekend at the Heidelberg Historical Society Museum at Heidelberg in Melbourne. The museum is located at the corner of Burgundy Street and Park Lane. As you can see by the photos the trough has been repaired and refurbished in 1988 as a bicentennial project. The trough is about a quarter full of dirt and rubbish and is not connected to any water source. The trough can be seen without gaining entry to the museum as it is located on a public footpath.

Whilst researching locations for another cache hide, I came across this watering trough... and remeberuing this locationless list, I quickly snapped at the opportunity.
Im not sure if this one is in original location, most likely moved wen new roads came throught this area.
it is now lcated in the Grounds of the Henry kendall
Museum.
It still has the dog trough on the side, sadly it is not connected to any water supply. .
this location also has a number of old relics and rusty tractors to look at if you are interested.
the museum building costs $3.00 to enter, but the grounds are free to wander around.

I've been past this one in Hunters Hill many times and wondered who put it there, now I know. Ironially directly behind the watering trough is a no horses sign, bet George is happy about that.
November 2007
Found this one while searching for a cache at Bendigo. It is full of dirt and a bit beaten about.
Thanks for the history lesson!
Found this one by accident in Wangaratta when walking to another cache close by. There was a line up to get into one of the venues for the Jazz festival and this is where the line up ended, right at the trough !. Not knowing what the line up was for, we waited and took the co ords before heading off to find the other cache. Will post pic soon, didn`t have the camera on me at the time.
October 2007
Came across this Bills Trough at Wedderburn in country Victoria in front of the local Historical Society building.
Thanks for the cache
I found this trough in front of the Elmore Railway station. I hadn’t noticed these until I read this cache, and now I am seeing them everywhere.
There are actually two of these troughs here. The other one is 50 meters away and is parts of the history center display, and is one of the clues for the cache “A Long Road To Sunshineâ€.
September 2007
Although this trough in Cheltenham Park is included on your list, we decided log it and include a photo. Certainly this one has seen better days and it does not help that it is full of concrete. The younger muggles who seem to spend their time around this trough smashing bottles certainly have no awareness of what this piece of concrete represents in our history.
Sitting on the side of the road in Kearsley NSW on the corner of Allandale & Caledonia St. Have driven past this on and off for over 19 years and never noticed it until a few weeks ago whilst on our motorbike when Mrs Riptide noticed it. Couldn't stop that day so came back to check it out today. This trough still has water in it and unlike others has not been turned into a plant pot.
July 2007
I just happened to notice this trough when we stopped at the town park in Captain's Flat for a picnic lunch during a long day of caching in the area (17 other GC caches found, which is a lot for us). I vaguely recalled this cache listing, but wasn't sure if this was the right sort of trough until I got back home, so I was glad that I took the coords & photos just in case!

Found this one on the corner of Oxford Rd and Macquarie Rd, Ingleburn, NSW.
It has been moved from its original location under a Bunya pine next to the Ingleburn railway station on Ingleburn Rd. According to the plaque it was placed around 1935 and the trough is recognised as a heritage site by Campbelltown City Council. Council has put it in the middle of a nice garden so it is out of easy reach.
TFTC,
GPS
P.S. didn't get any decent photos, sorry.
We see these things everywhere we go now. This one was in the caravan park we were staying at in Dunkeld for the weekend.
June 2007
Went for a quick ride out to Tallangatta to take pics and record co ords for this one. Easy to find, in the main street, in the park which makes up the very large medium strip. Opposite the CFA station.
This one looks to be in original condition, full of water (and slime) and doesn`t appear to have any sort of restoration work done to it at all.
This one is in Trentham, Victoria. It still contains water to this day, and has a tap on the side.
Thanks for raising my awareness about these reminders of yesteryear!
This one is inside the Wagga Wagga Museum so it's not so easy to access it, but entry is free when it is open. This one has the dog trough too, but as you can see it would be hard for the dog to get a drink at the moment. I also know some locals who own a cache at another one, so I bet they'll have to go and visit it soon too now.
Thanks hondo222,
Roostaman.
May 2007
Stopped here on the way to Charles Stur Uni (former Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum) for a bit of photography. Looks very much like the Yackandandah trough, only this one does have the dog trough on the side.
Took the opportunaty to stop at this one in Yackandandah while taking the bike for a ride. Trough seems to be in geat condition, maybe it has been revamped with a new coat or grout or similair. It doesn`t hold water as the plug in the bottom has been taken out, and this one doesn`t have a dog trough at the side. Easily found about 20m from the top pub on the main street.
Thought I`d stop off and tak a pic of this one whilst on my way to Tumut. Trough seems to be in excellent condition, painted cream with a green plaque. No water in it except the smaller dog trough on the side, and float / tap side has metal lid with lock.
Been going back and forwards past this one ever since I was born. At a local park where everyone who has driven from Albury to Wodonga and vice versa (before the freeway days) has passed it. The trough is filled with cement and painted green, the dog trough on the side still holds water and even a place to park your horse, or dog.
April 2007
Found by the Swaggies at the start on another cache. (No standing near the trough-GCZ8G6). We have driven past here many times but never noticed it. It is on the corner of Canterbury Rd and Blackburn Rd in Blackburn South. Trough appears to be in fairly good condition and it has a small plaque on it explaining the history of the troughs. It also appears to be plumbed up although there is no water in it now.
there was a WP for a cache used to live under here!
lots o' horse flesh around here as well!
passed this little trough many a time on the way to work and just livin' in this area.

The Swaggies knew of this trough at our local market in Berwick, Vic so we decided to log it and pass on the co-ordinates. Swaggie2 (Daff) is looking in better condition than this trough. Although you may have most of these on your list we will photograph them and pass on the co-ordinates to you.

After having driven up and down Mona Vale Rd thousands of times over the last 27 years we had never noticed this until on telling my parents about the one we found in Branxton they suggested we stop and look at this one. Right on the corner of Mona Vale Rd and Palm Rd St Ives in full view of the main road.
Our photo shows Roma at one closer in to Bendigo, and now serving more as an ornament and a reminder of times past!
Thanks hondo222 for our first cache of this kind.
January 2007
Actually drove right past this trough as it is in a side street in Branxton in the Hunter Valley NSW. Did a quick U turn and parked alongside to take a photo. The trough is in John Rose Avenue on the corner of Maitland Street. The water service has rusted through and the trough is now used as a flower box.
